Does medical assistant count as patient care experience?
Medical assistant appears on the accepted-experience lists of all five programs we checked, with conditions; UNC names only certified MAs, and front-desk or clerical work is excluded at UNC, UW MEDEX, Duke and Albany. CASPA lists medical assistant as an example of healthcare experience, and programs then set their own rules. UNC Chapel Hill accepts certified medical assistants. UW MEDEX accepts medical assistants in hospitals and clinics, but not front-office medical assistants.
What CASPA says
CASPA's Healthcare Experience covers paid or unpaid work in health care where you are not directly responsible for a patient's care, and its examples include "medical assistant." Patient Care Experience is for work where you are directly responsible for a patient's care. CASPA says each program's definitions vary and it has no preference which category you choose, and all five programs below list medical assistant among their accepted examples.
Five programs, side by side
| Program | Does MA work count? | The condition |
|---|---|---|
| UNC Chapel Hill Jan 2027 entry cycle | Certified MAs | Lists "Certified medical assistant"; paid only; no clerical positions |
| UW MEDEX Northwest 2026–27 | Clinical MAs | Hospital, primary care and specialty clinic MAs count; "Front Office Medical Assistant" doesn't; paid only |
| Duke 2026–27 | Yes | Lists "clinic assistant or medical assistant (MA)"; 1,000 hands-on hours by May 1 |
| Albany Medical College page checked Oct 2026 | Yes | Lists "Medical Assistant"; medical reception doesn't count |
| Yale current page (checked Oct 2026) | Listed as an example | Recommends, but doesn't require, six months of full-time healthcare employment or 1,000 hours of hands-on patient care and/or healthcare community service |
Examples, not a ranking. UNC's (Aug 1, 2026), UW MEDEX's (Oct 1, 2026) and Albany's (Oct 1) deadlines have passed, so check each page again when your cycle's requirements post.
Certified or not?
Of the five programs above, only UNC's list says "certified" for medical assistants. If UNC is on your list, a certification matters. Elsewhere, the pages we read look at duties: UW MEDEX "evaluates the job descriptions entered into CASPA," and Albany weighs "direct contact with patients, and level of responsibility." UW MEDEX and Albany exclude front-desk and reception work, UNC excludes clerical positions, and Duke excludes "other clerical positions."
If you work as an MA, do this
- Log clinical and front-desk hours separately. If you split your day, CASPA says to divide a mixed job's hours between categories rather than count them twice.
- Describe hands-on tasks in your CASPA job description, such as rooming patients and taking vitals, not just "assisted the provider."
- Don't count externship hours from an MA course. All five programs (UNC, Albany, UW MEDEX, Duke and Yale) exclude hours from training or for school credit.
- Check each program's job list and note the cycle and the date you checked.

Medical assistant appears on the accepted lists at all five programs we checked (UNC Chapel Hill, UW MEDEX, Duke, Albany and Yale), with conditions. UNC lists certified medical assistants, and UW MEDEX excludes front-office medical assistants.
Do I need to be a certified medical assistant?
At UNC Chapel Hill, its list says 'Certified medical assistant.' The other four programs we checked don't name certified MAs on the pages we read, though Yale gives preference to experience that requires a period of training, so check each program on your list.
